Essential Question: What are the effects of A and D on the graph and table of +/- A(F(x))+D?
In Class: Today we did an activity of posing in the shape of specific functions, and talked about certain variables that would translate, reflect, compress or stretch parent functions. A packet, "Practice with Vertical Transformation on Function Families", was given out to, well, practice graphing functions of the form +/- A(F(x))+D.
HW: None for tomorrow, though test corrections are due Friday. May be a good idea to do a couple graphs in the packet.

Today we introduced the next lesson. We examined how to model the cooling of hot coffee and the heating up of ice cream in a broken freezer. The homework for tonight is in the Orange Book: pg 445 OYO and pg 449 OYO.

Saturday, October 27, 2012

In Class: For the first half of class we went over the packet we did for homework. We looked at piecewise functions, both drawing them and wiriting equations. Then, we looked at a setpwise function. When we came back from lunch we took a partner quiz.
HW: No homework this weekend!!!

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

In Class: Today in class we worked on piece wise graphs and graphing them when we are given equations. Then we put the graphs on the board and discussed them. Also, we did the same thing with floor and ceiling graphs.
HW: Finish the piece wise packet that she gave us at the end of class for Friday and also the writing assignment is due Friday.

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

In Class: Today in class, we worked on our packet with practice problems for the function families. Practice problems inluded solving linear, exponentail, and power model euquations. Mrs. Prior also passed back a few papers from a while ago, like the unit circle quiz filling in coordinates.
HW: Finish the packet except for nmber one on the last page. This means #1-3, #1-6,and #8. You don't need to do the step function on the last page!

In Class: For the first half of the class we peer edited our writing assignments. Mrs. Prior stressed the idea that communicating our thinking and ideas is the most important, not necessarily if you arrive at the correct answer. She gave us a hard copy of the rubric on colored paper. The second of the class we went over problem #5 on page 426. We discussed how to find volume of an irregular shape if you are given the area of the base or height. With problem 5 part d, the volume and area of the base were given, so we were able to find the base.
HW: The writing assignment is due on Friday and MUST be typed. We were also given a packet and Mrs.Prior told us to start it and we will have time to work on it tomorrow in class. You should be able to do the kidney bean pool problem.

Thursday, October 18, 2012

In Class: We did a quick quiz on labeling the function families of graphs. Also, we worked on our writing assignment with our partners that chose to describe the same senario for last night's homework. Remember for the equation part that Mrs. Prior doesn't care if it is right; she just wants to see your effort and frame of thought.
HW: Work on the writing assignment draft that is due Monday.
Field trip people- Work on the writing assignment along with pg. 434 #1 and #2 in the thin orange book.

Essential Question: What type or types of situations can be modeled by  the various function families?
In-Class: Mrs.Prior is back! At the beginning of class we took a mad minute quiz.  We also did an activity with different graphs and had to form a group with people that had the same function families. Then we tried to pick a problem that would best represent the graphs we were given.  Some people had no problems, some people had one or two. We added these graphs and problems to the posters of the different function families. Go math!
HW: Jot down some ideas about ONE problem out of the four given on the assignment paper. Be prepared for a quick quiz tomorrow on function families. Four graphs will be given and then we have to decide what family each belongs to.

Monday, October 15, 2012

Essential Question: How do we identify which family a function belongs to if we are given a ...graph? ...equation? ...description? ...table?
In-class: Mrs.Prior was absent today, and we had a substitute. We were given the entire class to work on #2-6 on p.424-427 in the orange books we got last week (Contemporary Mathematics in Context).
HW: Finish #2-6 on p.424-427.

Friday, October 12, 2012

In-class: In class we took a mad minute quiz and went over it after. Then, Mrs. Prior explained and made posters for ceiling, floor, and piece-wise functions and what they model in real life.
EQ:How do we identify which family a function belongs to if we are given a graph? ...equation? ...description? ...table?
HW: No homework for the weekend!

In Class: Today Mrs. Prior, put out the posters we made yesterday (see yesterday's post), and we looked over them and asked any questions about the function families. We also finished filling out the tables in the blue packet. Mrs. Prior also went around the room and checked the Glencoe Pre-Calc HW assignments #6-8 and #1 of the new unit (p.52 #1-6). An orange textbook was handed out for the new unit. This textbook can be kept at home.

Essential Question: How do we identify which family a function belongs to if we are given a graph? ...equation? ...description? ...table?

Homework:  Orange Book p.423-424 #1

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

In-Class: Today, in class, we got together with a partner picked by Jethro and we got handed a graph from the blue packet. We had to use the graph to make a poster that outlined the name of the function, the equation, the graph, the table, the domain and range, words to describe it, as well as how we would describe to someone younger.
EQ: I have no idea.
HW: Glencoe Precalculus, Page 52 #1-6

Tuesday, 10/9

In class: We got two packets, in one packet there were layouts for pasting graphs, equations, domains, ranges, and function families for equations. In the other were the graphs, equations, etc that were made for cutting and pasting. This is what we worked on in class.

Homework: Finish cutting and pasting the rest of the packets in order.

Today in class we got into groups and continued to review the colored papers. We reviewed what would be on the test. Our homework is to study for the big test on Thrusday. Good luck!

Monday, October 1, 2012

Today is class we went to the computer lab to fill-out a survey. Then we went back to class and got into groups according to the color of homework paper. We worked in our groups reviewing our homework and got another sheet of colored paper to do for homework. The other homework was GPC#8 due tomorrow. We have a test on everything we have covered so far on Thrusday. There is an extra help session tommorow after school. Good luck!
